Why the Rain?
by Russell Kelfer
(There is no audio for this poem.)
The clouds that form so heavenly
Across a sea of sky,
Begin to block the rays of light,
And people question why.
The threat of rain seems imminent,
And makes it hard to see,
And we begin to grope for hope,
Wherever it might be.
We question how a God of love
Who holds within His hand,
The power to light the world could
Yet send darkness o’er the land.
But the trees cry out in anguish,
“Yet we desire to grow,
And if no rain should fall,
We would perish, that we know.”
And flowers brightly clothed
Are next to utter their refrain:
“We’d scorch and die as helpless life
Without the breath of rain.”
The creatures of the forest next
Add their responsive plea:
“If never rain then never grain
And starved we all would be.”
The fish sing from their habitat
A chorus all their own:
“Without the rain we too would die
For waters all we’ve known.”
So friend, God made the sun
For light, for heat, for power,
But knowing man He also called
For some a darker hour.
Cease your woe and weeping,
Stop your murmuring cry,
The rain was sent by God alone,
And only He knows why.
But when the storm is over,
And the sun’s aglow again,
You’ll see a world of life and growth,
That else could not have been.
