In Splendor or Silence
by Russell Kelfer
(There is no audio for this poem.)
An infinite glow; a celestial light –
Word written in gold shining out of the night.
A deafening roar to silence life’s sound,
A ring like a cymbal – heard the world ’round.
“If Christ must come,” so many say,
“Bright lights and great sounds must first lead the way.”
Yet, so said the Jews – a great king for the world,
To arrive in great splendor; with banners unfurled.
The splendor: A manger, humble and poor,
Neither carpets nor silks for the little straw floor.
The bright lights: But a star shining out of the east,
There were only the wise men – no nationwide feast.
Yet this was the King – God’s very own;
This was the King they had prayed would be known.
Today – as then – there’s no Christ proud and gay,
But a soft, tender voice saying, “I AM the Way”.
If you seek Him, you’ll find Him – sensation no part,
But meek in a manger – that manger your heart.
