At the Root of It All

One basic sin – how can it be –
One sin could stand so tall?
That God would say it lodges there
Deep at the root of it all?

Could there be a hidden flaw
That rises to the top,
And causes in the flesh – a drive
Man cannot seem to stop?

Oh, beloved, listen,
When all of life is spent
We’ll find a single, awesome sin
Behind our evil bent.

Where Lordship could not reach us
Because of man’s deep greed,
And searching in the human realm,
Would but conceal our need.

Till lusting for the very things
That satisfy our taste,
We overlooked God’s gracious gift –
The riches of His grace.

Be cautious, fellow Christian,
Lest you, too, slip and fall.
You see, the love of money is –
Right at the root – of it all.
