Poem: The God Who Knows
by Russell Kelfer
(There is no audio for this poem.)
I never knew how great my need,
I never grasped my darkest sin,
I saw my life as others saw it,
And not like God, who looks within.
I thought my service for the King,
My hours of labor, favor bring,
He must be pleased (how hard I try!)
There’s no one busier than I!
I make each meeting, pen in hand,
My record of attendance, grand.
Whene’er I sense someone in search,
How quick I am to mention “church”.
And all the while, deep down within,
My wretched heart is scarred with sin.
No matter what man thinks I am,
The God who knows, knows I’m a sham.
I’m doing all the “Christian” things,
Enjoying none of what that brings,
I live a lie; for deep within,
I know – I’ve not been born again.
