A Great Gulf Fixed

by Russell Kelfer

(There is no audio for this poem.)

There’s a great gulf fixed, beloved;
A chasm man cannot cross.
And while all of life has its setbacks,
This is man’s greatest loss.

You may have been a murderer,
As on this earth you trod,
But you came to Jesus Christ and now
You’re safe in the arms of God.

In hell there may be a successful man
Who earned this world’s degrees,
But never saw his grievous sins,
And faced God on his knees.

Now, all he had on earth is gone,
He took what it had to give.
Now he suffers in agony
For as long as man shall live.

From hell, can he see God’s glories?
Can heaven be seen from there?
Can he see that wretched prisoner
Safe in the Master’s care?

The rich man could see Lazarus,
That much we know for sure.
That dirty, boil infested man,
Was now cleansed and secure.

“Send someone just to cool my tongue”
That was the rich man’s cry.
But there was a great gulf fixed between,
And ‘nary a soul could pass by.

Today, you can make the obvious choice
Before you suffer that loss.
That chasm can be crossed today,
On the bridge at the foot of the Cross.
