Have I Prayed Enough?

by Russell Kelfer

(There is no audio for this poem.)

Should I give up? Are my prayers in vain?
Is it no longer worth it to pray?
Have I cried out to God so long and so loud,
There’s just nothing more I can say?

Have I cried for that soul ’till the dawn broke through,
And waited and waited in vain?
Have I begged and pled for that life to be changed,
But to see nothing again?

And have I concluded through all of my tears,
That praying will not get it done?
Could I be stopping my pleading too soon?
Could the rumblings have only begun?

Where did God give me a limit?
When did He say, “This is it?
I’ve let you pray long enough, My child,
I think you might as well quit.”

Oh, dear one, that voice you heard
Was not the Savior’s voice.
Satan was freed and allowed to plead
So you would have a choice.

Choose instead to say to him:
“Satan, you can flee.
I will pray till Jesus comes
Till His face I see.”

God may answer as you pled,
His plan seem rearranged,
Or He may just do nothing
Until your life is changed.

Prayed enough? No, no, my child,
Just drink His awesome grace,
And pray and pray and pray and pray
Until you see His face.

And with the saints of days gone by,
Around His throne one day,
You’ll feel as though you’re right at home,
Because you learned to pray.
